Tough Choices: A systematic Response to Domestic Violence and its Pervasive Impact on Families

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize the impact of domestic abuse on family system dynamics.

2. Develop strategies to support and advise clients in the victim/witness role and those who use abuse in family law cases.

3. Articulate the rationale for professional collaboration (including cross discipline collaboration) when working with families that have experienced domestic abuse.

Description:

This workshop examines domestic abuse through a multidisciplinary lens, challenging attendees to reject “one-size-fits-all” solutions in favor of a more pragmatic and tailored approach. Through interactive exercises, attendees will be encouraged to recognize how implicit bias may affect our ability to address the needs of each member of the family system.

The panel of presenters includes a trauma therapist, an ADR provider, and a family law attorney who all have extensive backgrounds working with families that have experienced domestic abuse. Participants will experience how domestic abuse can affect the resources available to family members. From there, participants will be encouraged to develop strategies to more effectively support and advise clients in our post-separation work with these families. Participants will also learn about the importance of professional collaboration as management strategy for these complex cases.
