  2. identify and reflect on how their own cultural background, personal experiences, and social identity shape their perspectives and interactions.
  3. implement culturally sensitive strategies for effectively engaging and collaborating with families from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Presentation Description:

In this comprehensive presentation, participants will embark on an insightful journey to critically evaluate and understand the various components and dimensions that constitute a culture. Participants will engage in reflective exercises to identify and analyze how their own cultural background, personal experiences, and social identity influence their perspectives and interactions. This self-awareness is crucial for fostering empathy and enhancing interpersonal communication.

Furthermore, the presentation will equip participants with culturally sensitive strategies to effectively engage and collaborate with families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Through practical examples and case studies, participants will learn to develop and implement action plans that respect and integrate the cultural values and needs of the families they work with.

By the end of this presentation, participants will not only have a deeper understanding of the intricacies of culture but also the tools to apply this knowledge in their personal and professional interactions, promoting inclusivity and cultural competence.

Speaker Bio:

Manijeh Daneshpour is the systemwide director and distinguished professor of marriage and family therapy in the Department of Couple and Family Therapy at Alliant International University in California. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist with close to three decades of academic, research, and clinical experience. She is from Iran and identifies herself as a third-wave feminist. Dr. Daneshpour’s main areas of research, publications, and presentations have been centered on issues of gender and power, multiculturalism, social justice, third-wave feminism, and premarital and marital relationships. She has recently published a book titled Gender, Power, and Global Social Justice: The Healing Power of Psychotherapy. This book offers a centered and balanced perspective on the impact of gender and power on men's and women's relationships with each other and their ecological contexts.It provides valuable insights for those working with families in any capacity by highlighting the intricate dynamics of gender and power within familial relationships. Understanding these dynamics can aid legal professionals in making more informed and empathetic decisions, ensuring that the legal process supports the healing and well-being of all family members involved. Additionally, the book's emphasis on social justice can help legal practitioners address systemic inequalities that may affect families.
